Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Monday, July 2, 2018, Arlie Roland Mansberger, Jr. MD, 95, loving husband of Ellen Piel Mansberger.

Dr. Mansberger was born on October 13th, 1922 in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania to Arlie Roland Mansberger and Mary Smith. He grew up and went to school in Connellsville, PA. Excelling in both football and basketball he attended Western Maryland College on an athletic scholarship. Arlie enlisted in the Army during WWII and ultimately served in the military in both active duty and the reserves for 27 years. After WWII he attended University of Maryland Medical School. In addition, he trained there and ultimately became Professor of Surgery and Head General Surgeon. Dr. Mansberger was instrumental in the development of the Trauma Center at the University. He subsequently moved to Augusta to become Professor and Chairman of Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. He served as chairman for 18 years before becoming Professor Emeritus and staying another 10 years teaching students. He was a recipient of multiple teaching awards. During his medical career he wrote numerous journal articles, book chapters and medical texts. He served as Editor of The American Surgeon, Governor to the American College of Surgeons, Vice Chairman of the American Board of Surgery, Member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and Surgical Representative to the American Board of Family Practice. Dr. Mansberger was also president of many medical organizations including the Baltimore Academy of Surgery, The Georgia Surgical, Georgia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Congress and the Southern Surgical Association. After retirement he enjoyed his family, travel and playing golf. He was a long time member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Augusta.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters: Rudy Shearer and Betty Shaw; as well as his daughter: Ellen Lynn Forbes. He is survived by his wife: Ellen; children: Leigh Ann Mansberger MD,MPH (David Joseph); son: Jack Mansberger MD (Shelley); grandchildren: Sean Forbes (Kathy), Will Mansberger, and Luke Mansberger; great grandchildren Liam and Logan Forbes; sister: Vivian Tarr.

Beyond his contributions to medicine he will always be remembered for his kindness, his laugh, singing and playing the piano, along with his grand passion for life.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 6, 2018 at 11 A.M. at Church of the Good Shepherd with The Rev. Robert Fain officiating. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd, Mansberger Memorial Fund, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904.
