JANICE ELIZABETH SUPER GLISSON

Augusta, GA – Born December 22, 1924, Janice died April 30, 2017, having lived a full life. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 11:00 AM, at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 3321 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA, followed by a reception in the parish hall.

Janice was born in Garnersville, NY to William Anthony Super and Winifred Baker Super. Janice and her brother Bill moved with their parents to North Adams, MA, where Janice excelled as a student and athlete. Her sports included downhill and slalom skiing and hunter jumper riding. Her academic success led her to Skidmore College where she graduated in 1945 with a BS in Chemistry. Following graduation, she moved to New York City and worked at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in the laboratory.

A few years later, Janice followed her parents to Augusta, GA, where her father worked in the textile industry. She continued working in hospital labs, including the VA Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Shortly after arriving in Augusta, Janice attended a party at the Bon Air Hotel, where she met a tall, handsome veteran, Lloyd Arnette Glisson, whom she married in 1950. They were married 63 years, before Lloyd died in 2013.
Janice continued working until they began a family in 1955 with the birth of their daughter Therese Lee, followed quickly by the births of brothers Lloyd Arnette Jr and William Tracy. With three kids under the age of four, Janice stayed home and devoted herself full-time to being a wife and mother.

When all the kids were in school, Janice returned to the workforce as a forensic chemist in the Criminal Investigation Division of the Armed Services at Fort Gordon, where she specialized in serology. She traveled the world investigating and testifying in criminal cases on military installations. Perhaps her most well-known case was that of Green Beret Captain Jeffrey MacDonald, who was convicted of killing his wife and children in Charles Manson copycat murders.

Even with her demanding job, Janice returned to school to continue her math and chemistry studies, while helping her children with their own homework and supporting their activities.

Janice loved to play bridge, first learning the game in college, and continuing with neighborhood bridge clubs. Over the years, she developed a love of duplicate bridge through the Augusta Bridge Center, where she excelled in local and regional tournaments, earning enough points to be a Life Master. Janice continued playing until just a few weeks before her death.

Many will remember Janice turning heads as she tooled around Augusta in her chartreuse Kharman Ghia convertible, until her health forced her to quit driving, much to her dismay. Janice drove the convertible from Cape Cod to Tybee over the years, as she pursued her quest for the perfect tan.

Janice had a group of life long high school girlfriends, the Nit Wits, whom she loved to visit on Cape Cod. Although only two of the group of eight are still living, they all remained close in her heart.

Janice is survived by her three children: Therese “Terry” Franzen (Steve); Lloyd Jr “Butch” Glisson; William “Bill” Glisson (and his former spouse, Belinda Glisson); four grandchildren: Sarah Franzen (Andrew Stevens), Charles “Chip” Franzen, Scott Franzen, and William Reese Glisson.

The family thanks Debra Murrell for her many years of devoted care to Janice and Lloyd; Jean Smith for her additional care in recent weeks; and the staff at Regency Hospice for their caring services.
