Jimmy Menger

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Tuesday, September 26, 2017, James M. Menger, 81, loving husband of 34 years to the late Martha S. Menger.

Jimmy was born in Augusta and graduated from Academy of Richmond County, Class of 1954. He is a graduate of Augusta College, University of Georgia and attended Rutgers University-Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He worked for Georgia Railroad Bank, First Union, and retired from Wachovia after 45 years of service. For most of his career, he managed the Daniel Village Branch of the Georgia Railroad Bank and was affectionately known as the Mayor of Daniel Village. Professionally, he participated in the American Banking Institute.

He loved to worship with music and was an active member of First Baptist Church, including deacon emeritus, chairing numerous committees and singing in the choir. He enjoyed being part of the Cason Bruker Sunday School Class and later joining the Caring Co-Ed Class.

Jimmy’s love of art and music was part of his daily life, especially after retirement when he enrolled in art classes at Augusta State University. In 2009, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts and continued taking classes until 2016. He was often found in the campus studio working on ceramics. He was a lifelong learner.

He was a member of The Augusta Choral Society, The Augusta Symphony League, The Morris Museum of Art serving as docent, Mad Potters at ASU and Friends of the Augusta Library. He could light up a room to tell people about the art he loved. He also participated in performances with The Augusta Players.

He could be found most days before sunrise at the gym for spin class and coffee with friends and McDonalds or Chick-fil-a. His children delighted in his willingness to carry an iPhone so they could track him down. Jimmy loved his family and he especially loved his time with his children and grandchildren. A family trip to Isle of Palms has been a tradition for over 25 years.

Family members include his son: Jed M. Menger, Jr. (Ann Marie) of Augusta; daughters: Beth Morrison (Jeff) of Augusta, Martha “Tootsie” Urwiler of Houston, TX; grandchildren: James M.
