1st LT George William Lansdowne, Jr.

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Monday, October 7, 2024, at home in the company of his loving wife of 43 years, Wendy Lansdowne, and his four children.

George was born on December 19, 1947, in Kearny, NJ. He grew up in Fair Haven, NJ where he frequented two of his favorite lifelong places, the beach and the golf course. He enjoyed his childhood with loving parents, two doting older sisters, and friends in Little League and Boy Scouts. He attended Rutgers University, where he majored in history and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Army ROTC. He was a loyal fan of the Scarlet Knights, pleased to see the football team with a winning record so far this season. Upon graduating, George served in the US Army where he was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant for his tours of duty in Vietnam, Germany, and even a brief stint in his future home city of Augusta. After serving his country, George embarked on a successful career in textile sales, which eventually brought him to his home in Augusta in 1989. 

With his outgoing personality, George never met a stranger, and once he was your friend, he was your friend for life. He will be missed by everyone who knew him for his witty sense of humor, wealth of knowledge, and ability to solve The New York Times daily puzzles, even on Sundays. He enjoyed playing all types of games and as a competitor he showed no mercy and was always ready with banter and trash talk. His favorite place to spend time in town was at Augusta Country Club, where he helped found the Pancake Invitational with his beloved golf group vying for the Landsdown (sic) Cup. He and his wife served as proud and generous guides to The Masters for friends and family from around the country. He loved to travel and took trips all over the world throughout his life with his wife, his friends and his family. He was a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews who always cherished their time spent with their fun Uncle George. 

George’s life was bookended by natural disasters, as he was born a week before the infamous Great Blizzard of 1947 and passed a week after Hurricane Helene hit Augusta. 

He is survived by his wife, Mamie Wendel Hill Lansdowne; children George III (Samantha), Katherine (Shawn) Garitz, Jack (Trici), and Timothy; grandchildren, Charles Lansdowne, Jane Garitz, Olivia Garitz, Lucas Lansdowne, and Lola Lansdowne; sisters Mary Bailey and Jane (E. Henry) Boardman. George was preceded in death by his parents, George W. Lansdowne, Sr. and Ethel Hemsley Lansdowne. 

A service and reception to celebrate his life will be held at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 26th at 2:00 PM. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the charity of your choice.
