Barbara Newby

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Thursday, November 18, 2021, Barbara Smith Newby, 83, wife of the late Clarence Ray Newby for 57 years.

Barbara was born and raised in Augusta, GA where she graduated from the Academy of Richmond County High School and went on to graduate from Augusta College receiving her degree in Nursing. Barbara worked as a nurse at Doctor’s Hospital, University Hospital, and retired from the Medical College of Georgia. After retiring, Barbara spent her time as a caregiver for her mother, son, and most recently her loving husband. Her pride and joy were her three grandchildren. She loved her family and the holidays. To know her was to love her, she touched so many lives. She gave selflessly and was always finding ways to help others. She lived her faith and loved the Lord.

Family members include her daughter: Holly Fox (Chris); grandchildren: Christian Fox, Anna Grace Fox, and Austin Fox; brothers: Robert H. Smith (Cindy) and Charles H. Smith (Debbie); sister-in-law: Clara Sharpton (Jay) and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents: Robert H. and Myra B. Smith and son: Ray Hamilton Newby.

The family would like to give special thanks to her niece Julie McCants, for taking care of her. Barbara loved her like a daughter, she loved her trips to town and the special times they had together.

The funeral service will be held Monday, November 22, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Bill Hilley officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
