AUGUSTA, Ga. - Preston Sizemore, 81 went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loved ones.
Family members include his wife of 35 years, Charlene P. Sizemore, his daughter, Michelle Sizemore Ansley and her husband Lynn Ansley and grandchildren Jackson Sizemore Ansley and Sarah Catherine Ansley. He has an honorary daughter from Texas, Deana Dykes and her husband, Keith Dykes and grandsons Zachary Isaac Dykes and John Carlos Dykes. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews who always shared a special place in his heart, son Preston Sizemore (Libby) and daughter Kathy Anderson (John) and granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Sizemore.
He was a member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder and Sunday School Teacher. Preston was active in the community and served in many capacities to include the Board of Directors of St. Joseph Hospital, Trinity Hospital, Walton Rehabilitation and the Walton Foundation. He was President of the Exchange Club of Augusta, The Shield Club and served on numerous boards and committees in the security industry. He was a member of the Augusta Country Club and a member of the Beaters Bible Study
He was born at home to Eddie and Thelma Sizemore on June 22, 1935. Preston grew up during the depression and it made an impact on how he would live his life. He began helping his family by securing a job with the Augusta Herald while in the sixth grade and then at The Augusta Chronicle. He worked throughout grammar and high school and he created a life long history of being kind to people, delivering on time and he had one basic principle in life, “Do Right!”
Preston enjoyed sports of all kinds but his main love was baseball. He was hailed as “Richmond’s plucky little southpaw pitcher” after a win at the City League games between Richmond and the Battey Legion Juniors. He always credited his success to his team mates and he continued to always give credit to someone else throughout his life. Preston became a star baseball player at Richmond Academy where they won the Southeastern Championship for 7 years in a row and he was named most valuable player in 1954. He was chosen to play on the All Star team for the Southeastern Region at Ponce de Leon Park in Atlanta. He also played for the American Legion, All Conference, Post 63, Georgia Teacher’s College and many summer pick-up games. He never forgot the thrill of traveling with the baseball team to Richmond, Virginia; Selma, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia.
Preston’s journey through life would have him coaching baseball, basketball and football to many young athletes over the years. He continued sharing his incredible spirit of teamwork through many venues whether it was building and racing soap box derby cars, a summer youth program at church or his famous Krispy Kreme Sunday School classes for the youth.
Preston graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1954. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Georgia Teachers College and his Masters of Education from Georgia Southern College. He served in the United States Marines and was honored to become a Chaplain while serving his country.
Preston worked in the family business known as Merchant Police that his father opened in 1955. After his father’s death in 1957, Preston would spend night and weekends running the patrol service and helping his mother with the business. After college, he taught History and coached at Butler High School. Always the entrepreneur, in 1961 he left teaching and entered the insurance industry in Augusta, GA. In 1964, he moved to Athens, GA to pursue an independent insurance company. In 1966 he took another promotion and moved to Charlotte, NC. While in Charlotte, NC, he joined a group of friends and they founded Providence Day School, where he served as the first Head Master. In 1971, his mother brought him home to Augusta as President of Merchant Police which was the family business. Preston always had an eye for expansion and led the charge to grow the family business. He started the expansion with the name change to Sizemore Security International and opened satellite offices in Macon, GA and Columbus, GA. In 1979 he expanded into the personnel business with the opening of Sizemore Personnel. The entrepreneurial spirit hit again in 1987 and Sizemore Janitorial was created. These additions created the current company name Sizemore, Inc. During his time at Sizemore (1954- 2011) he would create one of the largest privately held companies in the South, with 16 offices in 8 states. After his departure from Sizemore Inc. in 2011, he created Workforce Capital where he served as CEO alongside Charlene and Michelle until his death.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at Charlene and Preston’s residence. Funeral Service will be Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Reid Memorial Church, 2261 Walton Way, Augusta. Ga. Burial will be at Westover Cemetery.
The Exchange Club of Augusta will be honorary pallbearers. Memorials can be made to Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church or Walton Foundation.
