He attended both Seattle University and Washington State University, where he earned a bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Master of Education Administration. He is a retired U.S. Army Colonel (LTC), and Department of the Army Civilian with more than 39 years of combined Federal Service. He served one year in Germany and two and half years in Vietnam.
Family members include his children: Lisa Michelle Kirkey (Phoenix, AZ) and Anita Lynn Kirkey (Grovetown, GA); grandchild: Holly R. Johnson and husband, Eric (Scottsdale, AZ); and his six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents: Charles Meddard Kirkey (Seattle, WA) and Gertrude Martha Bormes Kirkey (Seattle, WA).
