Dorothy Layman

December 3, 1932 - February 7, 2022

North Augusta, SC - Dorothy Marie (Dutko) Layman, 89, devoted wife of 65 years to Edward James Layman, Jr. entered into rest on Monday, February 7, 2022. Dorothy was born in Albany, NY on December 3, 1932 to William Nicholas Dutko and Eleanor McElroy Dutko and was a resident of Augusta, GA for 53 years. Dorothy graduated from Albany High School in 1950 and married Edward on July 6, 1951. She worked as a clerical assistant for the U.S. Army in Germany, Fort Monmouth, N.J. and Fort Gordon, GA. She finished her career at the Downtown VA Hospital in the Eye Clinic and retired in 1994. Dorothy was a member of St. James United Methodist Church where she served as a member of the Administrative Board, President of the Methodist Women’s Club, President of the Griffin Group, member of the Emma Lester Sunday School Class and the church choir. Her passion in Life was music. She loved to sing and sang in the choir in high school and all the churches she attended throughout the years and sang many solos over her lifetime. Mrs. Layman was preceded in death by her parents: William and Eleanor; her husband: Edward J. Layman, Jr.; her sons: Edward J. Layman, III and Andrew L.J. Layman; brothers: James Dutko, Robert Dutko and Richard Madeline; sister: Susan V. Madeline; daughter-in-law: Sharron S. Layman and granddaughters: Lila Lybrand and Christina A. Layman Howell. She is survived by her sons: William J.J. Layman, Sr. of Augusta, GA; Keith A. J. Layman, Sr. (Anna) of Mills River, NC and Michael P.J. Layman, Sr. (Teresa) of North Augusta, SC; grandchildren: William J.J. Layman, Jr. (Kara) of Acworth, GA, Patricia M. Harner (Chris), Michael P.J. Layman, Jr. of Hayes, VA, Brandi N. Rockwood (Charles) of Hephzibah, GA, Keith A.J. Layman, Jr., Danielle M. Layman of Augusta, GA, Trisha M. Williams of North Augusta, SC and Andrea R. Layman of Smyrna, GA; sisters-in-law Dolores Dutko of Hephzibah, GA and Edna Madeline of Valatie, NY and 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. The funeral service will be Monday, February 14, 2022 at St. James United Methodist Church with Rev. Thurman Norville officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the St. James Griffin Group. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 439 Greene Street, Augusta, GA 30901. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 13, 2022 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484.
