Augusta, GA – Elizabeth Cook of Augusta, Georgia died on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Augusta Medical University.

As “Betsy” Cook, she attended Morningside Elementary and Grady High Scholl class of 1955. She was a band member (clarinet) and Science Club officer. Selection as a national finalist for her science fair project encouraged her interest in biology. Graduating in summer 1958 from North Georgia College in Dahlonega as “Liz” Cook, she worked in state and CDC labs before earning an M.S. degree (1964) a Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1970), both from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta.

Liz was supervising a rheumatology lab, teaching at MCG, and pursuing an M.D. degree when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at age 38. She continued to work and to b\play the clarinet in the Augusta Symphony and to attend St. Mary on the Hill for many years. She kept up-dated on scientific journals, loved listening to music, gardening, and learned to navigate the internet. Her independence and her quirky sense of humor are qualities to be remembered by family, friends, co-workers, and students.
