Elizabeth "Liz" South Penny

Augusta, GA – On Wednesday, January 5, 2022, surrounded by her family, Mrs. Elizabeth “Liz” South Penny, 84, went to be with her heavenly father. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Joseph Penny, Sr. and parents James and Elizabeth South.

She is survived by her daughters Tracy (Robert) Gambrell and Tina Penny as well as grandchildren Grace Gambrell and Robert Clayton Gambrell, Jr. In addition, she is survived by four step-children Joseph Penny, Jr., Teresa Beach, Christina Breece, John Penny and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Liz was a native of Augusta and Graduate of the Academy of Richmond County, receiving her Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Teachers College, and Masters from the University of South Carolina. She was a life-long educator beginning her teaching career at McEachern High School in Powder Springs, GA where she met her husband Joe. She spent many years as a PE teacher at Butler High School, finishing as a media specialist after receiving her Masters. She impacted the lives of many students and everyone around her with her enthusiasm and love of life. After her retirement, she and her husband loved traveling to craft shows selling the furniture that he made.

Liz loved spending time with her family and grandchildren especially at the beach house on Tybee Island and with her close-knit friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was always generous and kind to everyone she met. She was known for her smile and wit always cutting up with friends and strangers alike.

She was a member of West Acres Baptist Church and loved the Lord. She would always say, “God has a plan for your life.” She instilled many values in us and lived her life with such strength and integrity.

Rev. Larry Harmon will be officiating a private service for family and friends at Bellevue Memorial Gardens on Tuesday January 11, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.

If so desired, in lieu of flowers, you may make a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice in her name.

In light of the recent Covid outbreak, wearing a mask is strongly encouraged.
