Genell Smith

Evans, GA- Genell Warren “Gena” Smith, age 79, died peacefully on Monday, December 24, 2018 at Brandon Wilde Health Center in Evans, Georgia due to complications of Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Genell was born and raised in Enterprise, Alabama. Her parents were Robert L. Warren and Nell Storey Warren. Around the age of 14 she decided that she wanted to become a registered nurse, and thanks to a strong spirit of determination she did just that, graduating from the University of Alabama School of Nursing in Birmingham in 1960. After graduating she worked as a staff nurse at the University Hospital in Birmingham where she met the love of her life, Dr. Edward H. Smith. They married in August, 1961.

The couple then lived in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Long Beach, California before settling in Augusta in 1966. For the next 25 years Gena concentrated on raising their three sons. She later enrolled at Augusta College and graduated with a degree in Sociology.

In 1991 she began working for the Georgia Department of Public Health where she found her niche working with patients from all walks of life, especially the old and poor.

Genell loved traveling, reading, and playing with her young children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Dr. Edward Smith, sons Gregory Smith, Dr. Brian Smith (Susan), and Scott Smith (Donna), and 7 grandchildren, her brother Wayne Warren (Betty), sister Panz Holified (Gerald), and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Brandon Wilde Arbor for the loving care with which they attended Genell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 106 SRP Drive, Suite A, Evans, GA 30809.
