Augusta, GA – H. William Hughes, 91, entered into rest Friday, May 21, 2021,
loving husband of the late Maureen O’Connell Hughes.

Family members include his daughter: Cathy H. Millar (Doug); grandchildren: Ryan Sheehan Millar (Daolinh), Virginia Millar Massey (Tye), William Benjamin Millar (Kaitlyn), Patrick Hughes, Maureen Hogan, and Sean Hogan; and five great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Bill was predeceased by his daughter: Susan “Sissie” Hughes Hogan; son: H. William “Billy” Hughes III and grandson: Douglas M. Millar IV.

Bill was born in Augusta on March 8, 1930. He attended Boys Catholic High, graduating in 1948. He then entered Clemson University School of Architecture and graduated in 1953. Following graduation, Bill married Maureen O’Connell and entered the U.S. Army, where he served in Verdon France.

Upon returning to Augusta, he and his lifelong friend and fellow graduate of Clemson, Bob Beattie, established Hughes and Beatie Architecture firm. They went on to design many commercial buildings in the CSRA, including many area schools. Bill was a member of the American Institute of Architects, Kiwanis Club, Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and CSRA Shag Club.

Bill enjoyed tennis, golf, music, dancing and traveling with his wife, Maureen. He had a passion for the Clemson Tigers football team and proudly wore orange wherever he went. He cherished his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. “Papoo”, as the children called him, loved to tell them pirate stories, do treasure hunts, play beach music and his harmonica for them, as they danced to his bluesy tunes.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 24, 2021 one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Deacon Bob Hookness officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 139 Way of Peace, North Augusta, SC 29841.
