James Garner

Augusta, GA - Mr. James Edward Garner, 82, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 28, 2020.

James, or “Jimmy” as his friends and family knew him, was born to Emmett and Emmie Garner of Augusta, GA on March 16th, 1938. He served in the United States Army during the pre-Vietnam era before becoming a licensed realtor for much of his life. In 2007, he retired from a career as a license inspector for the City of Augusta. He was an avid fisherman and golfer throughout his life and loved watching University of Georgia football with his family in the fall. Toward the middle of his life, he came to saving knowledge of his Lord Jesus Christ, which sustained him in winning a battle with cancer in the early 1980s. The love he had for Jesus informed the powerful love he had not only for his family but for everyone he met. Jimmy never met a stranger who didn’t quickly become a friend.

Jimmy is survived by his four sons, Jim Garner, Frank Garner (Gloria), Clark Garner (Joy), Bill Garner, and one daughter, Merrell Garner; seven grandchildren, Jamie Garner (Katie) John-Michael Garner, Anna Sams (Adam), Katy Garner, Breanna Garner, Olegs Garner, and Aleks Garner; one great-grandchild, Elliott Garner; and his sister, Eleanor Fleischauer. James was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-five years, Merrell Wooddall Garner.

A small graveside memorial was held Tuesday, June 30 at 9 A.M. at Westover Cemetery.. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Grace Restoration Church, P.O. Box 211662, Augusta, GA 30917.
