Maura Aktunc

Augusta, GA – Maura Patricia Aktunc (McKiernan) was called to heaven on December 28th, 2021, in the loving care of the staff at Kentwood Extended care and prior to this in Benton House Senior Living. She was born in Ireland in July 1924 and when she was 18 years old, she moved to England to train as a nurse. She travelled to New York in 1955 where she worked in several hospitals as well as private nursing care. While in New York she met her beloved husband Dojan (Don) and they married. She lived in Ohio for 6 years with Don before coming to live in Augusta where Don practiced internal medicine at Medical College of Georgia prior to his retirement. Sadly, Don passed away in 2006.

Maura loved playing tennis, walking, and reading. She enjoyed an active social life and enjoyed dining in many of Augusta’s restaurants with friends. Travel was something she really enjoyed and took several trips to Ireland, Turkey and many other countries.

Maura is predeceased by her parents Edward and Brigid, her sister Josephine and her brothers James Philip and Edward. She will be sadly missed by her nephew Eamonn and her many nieces and nephews in Ireland and Turkey. Her longtime friends Joe and Barbara will also mourn her passing.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, January 11th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors. A Funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, January 12th at 11.00 a.m. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, Augusta with burial afterwards in Westover Memorial Park.
