Richard Zeigler Craig

Richard Zeigler Craig, 93, returned peacefully to his heavenly Father at his home on November 11, 2018, surrounded by his beloved family. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, the mother of his children, Frances Elizabeth Craig and his dear wife Dorothy Little Craig. He was born June 4, 1925 to Samuel Roland Craig and Sallie Akins Craig, the youngest of 5 children, and was raised by his beloved Aunt Hettie Akins Wiggins due to his parents’ illness.

He is survived by his children and their spouses Susan E. Craig; Richard Z. Craig, Jr. (Maureen); Daniel J. Craig (Crystal); Catherine A. Folger (Billy) of Augusta; and Roland G. Craig (Christel) of Atlanta. Also survived by his stepchildren Neal Little (Jan); Susan L. Wilson (Joey) of Covington LA; Terry Little (Jeannie), Gary Little (Ramona); David Little (Kim) of Abbeville SC; and Alan Little (Kathy) of Macon GA.
grandchildren: Janie C. Osborne (Sam), Martha C. Robertson (Heard), Catherine J. Folger, Sarah A. Craig, Richard Z. Craig III (Islen) of Tianjin, China, Craig E. Folger, Rebecca E. Folger, and Emily Craig Stout
Great grandchildren: Julia E. Teague, Thomas H. Robertson IV, Daniel C. Robertson, Craig E. Folger, Jr (CJ), John P. Stout, Jr., Robert J, Stout, Sarah Jane Stout, Anne Catherine Robertson, Seton W. Craig, Cecelia Craig, Frances E. (Betty) Robertson, and Jaxson S. Hyatt.
He is also survived by fifteen step grandchildren and fifteen step great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Craig was a native Augustan and was a Graduate of Boys Catholic High School and Augusta Law School. He worked in the Finance business and retired as Vice President of C & S National Bank. He joined the U.S. Navy at 18 and proudly served our country in WWII as a gunner’s mate aboard USS LSM 13, the first ship to enter Tokyo Bay at the end of the war. A fierce patriot, he was proud to be an American. An active member of the American Legion, he was always present at local memorial celebrations. It is most fitting that he died on Veterans Day in the 11th hour.

He was a past president of the Augusta Optimist Club, a past Grand Knight of Patrick Walsh Council Knights of Columbus, served on Sacred Heart Church Parish Council, was President of Sacred Heart School PTA, and was pleased to help establish the Augusta Consumer Credit Bureau.

Richard loved to help his neighbors and could often be seen mowing grass for anyone who needed an extra hand. He gave his best to be the patriarch that instilled in his family, by example, the importance of faith, integrity, hard work and patriotism.

The family is very thankful to Trinity Hospice, Brenda, Nicole, Janice, Tom, John, Drs. Stanley Smith, Ray Johnson, and Edward Porubsky and Randy Arnold for their wonderful care.

Father Thomas Healy will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 12:15 P.M. at the Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity with Msgr. James Costigan, Father Mike Ingram, and Father Mark Ross.
