Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Monday, July 2, 2018, Richard Douglas Patterson, 74, loving husband of Fonda Ghann Patterson for 41 years.

Mr. Patterson was born in a log cabin in Poulan, GA. He was a 1962 graduate of Albany High School, attended Augusta College, and was a member of Warren Baptist Church. He started his banking career with C&S Bank in Augusta and over the next several years worked for banks all over Georgia, including in Macon and Atlanta. He was passionate about his career in banking and excelled as an executive officer and president. After retiring from banking, Mr. Patterson began his second career when his daughter, Hope, was born. He was very active in her childhood and school activities at Westminster Schools of Augusta and often said his second career as “Mr. Mom” was his most rewarding. Mr. Patterson loved his family and friends and had a special place in his heart for his beloved pets.

Family members in addition to his wife include children: Constance P. Haywood (Thomas) of Suwanee, GA, R. Douglas Patterson, Jr. (Carol) of Gainesville, GA, Ghann P. Shirer, and Hope Ghann Patterson of Brookline, MA; grandchildren: Emma Patterson Haywood, Tybee Haywood, Paige Patterson, Sam Patterson, Callie Patterson, Jake Shirer, and Rob Shirer; sisters: Brenda Gail Patterson Lucich and Cathy Marion (Ray); sister-in-law: Margaret M. Patterson; and brother-in-law: Clay A. Ghann (Cathy). He was preceded in death by his mother: Pauline Howard Patterson; father: Harry N. Patterson; and brother: Rudolph Nelson Patterson.

The funeral service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations be made to the American Heart Association, 516 West Avenue, North Augusta, SC 29841.
