Tim Mirshak

Augusta, GA - Timothy Samuel Mirshak, 64, the loving husband of Agnes Gambill Mirshak, peacefully entered into rest Monday, November 5, 2018 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

Tim is survived by his wife of 42 years and his children, Brian Timothy Mirshak (Valerie), of Augusta; Anna Mirshak Burns (Justin), of Atlanta; Joseph Samuel Mirshak (Carrie Ann), of the Netherlands; Ellen Elizabeth Mirshak, of Atlanta; and Margaret “Meg” Sheehan Mirshak, of Atlanta. He is the proud “Papa” to his eight grandchildren, Samuel, Benjamin and Nicholas Mirshak; William “Liam,” Catherine, and Charles Burns; and Cormac and Graham Mirshak.

Tim is also survived by his siblings, James “Jim” Mirshak, of Knoxville, Tenn.; Lisa Mirshak Winn (Mike), of Rock Hill, S.C.; Steven Mirshak, of Knoxville, Tenn; and Julie Mirshak O’Donnell (Michael), of Cumming, Ga.
Tim, son of the late Samuel and Geraldine Mirshak, was born in Augusta, Ga. and raised in North Augusta, S.C. He attended Our Lady of Peace Catholic School and graduated valedictorian of Aquinas High School in 1971. He received a Juris Doctor from Emory University in 1977 after graduating with a degree in economics from Emory University.

As an attorney for 41 years, Tim was dedicated to serving clients in Augusta and Aiken with compassion and understanding. In 1978, he opened his own law practice and was later joined by his law partner, Joan Smith, and son, Brian, at the Law Offices of Mirshak and Smith. Tim was president of the Augusta Young Lawyers and actively involved in the Augusta-Aiken legal community.

Tim tirelessly served the Catholic Church in Augusta, the Diocese of Savannah and his beloved alma mater, Aquinas High. He was an active parishioner of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church where he was president of the parish council. He was school board president and finance committee chair at Aquinas on numerous occasions during the course of three decades. He oversaw several capital campaigns for St. Mary and Aquinas. Additionally, he was on the diocesan finance committee.

In 2000, Tim was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal by Pope John Paul II. The award recognizes distinguished service to the Roman Catholic Church and is the highest medal that can be awarded to lay people by the papacy.

Tim had a heart for caring for the poor and lonely, offering his time to individuals in their times of greatest need. His care for the less fortunate members of the community was demonstrated in his longtime service as president of the operating board of Villa Marie Apartments, a nonprofit housing community for low-income individuals and families. He was a strong supporter of Catholic Social Services.

Tim was respected in the community for his ability to bring solutions to complex situations. He was a member of the Augusta Coliseum Authority, member of the St. Joseph Hospital board of directors, president of the Augusta Symphony board of directors and an ardent supporter of the Miller Theater restoration. He was named a distinguished friend of Paine College.
Above all, Tim was devoted to his family and a loyal friend to many people. He enjoyed relaxing in the North Carolina mountains and showing off his signature dance move, “the Gator.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 10 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Monsignor P. James Costigan celebrant.
