Alfred Zachry “Zach” Everitt, 86, of Augusta, Georgia, passed away on December 29, 2025.
Born May 13, 1939, in Madison, Georgia, Zach was the second son of Kathryn Zachry Everitt and Henry Olin Everitt. From an early age, he was shaped by faith, integrity, honesty, and discipline. Caring, serious, and steady by nature, he was also quietly warm and gently humorous, maintaining deep and lasting friendships throughout his life.
On June 14, 1967, Zach married Mary Gurney Wade, his devoted wife of 58 years. Together they built a life grounded in faith, family, and gratitude. Zach was the anchor of his family—a steady presence whose guidance was trusted and whose advice was always thoughtful and measured.
He is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter, Sarah Everitt Baker (B. Rhett Baker III) of Statesboro, Georgia; his son, Zachry Wade Everitt (JoLynn Joyce Everitt) of Austin, Texas; his grandchildren, Mary Zachry (“Zee”) Baker, Kathryn (“Kate”) Cantrell Baker, and B. Rhett Baker IV; and his brother, Henry Olin Everitt, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Kathryn Everitt.
Faith guided Zach’s life. A devoted member of Trinity-On-the-Hill Global Methodist Church, he lived his beliefs sincerely and without display. In moments of reflection, Zach would offer blessings marked by humility, gratitude, and gentle humor. They often began, “Dear Lord, it’s me, Zach again. Of course you knew that. We’re in the Lowcountry—of course you knew that too…”
Zach attended Madison Elementary School and Morgan County High School before enrolling at the University of Georgia, where he studied at the Warnell School of Forestry, the Terry College of Business, and the School of Law. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and a Bachelor of Law degree. While in law school, he served as Governor of his senior class and as Executive Editor of the Student Editorial Board of the Georgia Bar Journal and received the Shinn Memorial Award for best published legal writing.
Zach practiced commercial real estate law in Augusta for 46 years. He began his career with Hull, Willingham, Towill, Norman & Barrett, later becoming a partner, and in 1980 joined Dye, Miller & Tucker as a partner. He retired in 2010 from Tucker, Everitt, Long, Brewton & Lanier. Widely respected, Zach never advertised his services and took pride in doing good work quietly and well. He also served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Real Estate Section of the State Bar of Georgia.
Alongside faith, family, and the law, Zach’s heart belonged to the Lowcountry of South Carolina. An avid fisherman, he was a longtime member of the Combahee Club and also held memberships in the Augusta Country Club, the Augusta Golf Association, and Ducks Unlimited. In 1995, Zach and Mary built a cottage on Village Creek on St. Helena Island near Beaufort. There, he found great joy sitting quietly, admiring God’s creation, especially the osprey that returned year after year to nest on the pole he installed when building his dock.
Zach also dearly loved his dog, Beaufort, a faithful companion who brought him daily comfort and joy.
Zach lived a life marked not by noise, but by substance. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
