Angela Kuhlke

Mary Angela Kuhlke, 80, wife of the late Frederick Hamilton Kuhlke, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

A native of Gordon, Georgia, “Angie” was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edgar David Strange.  Prior to early graduation from Wilkinson County High School, Angie was crowned Miss Wilkinson County.  She was admitted to Mercer University where she met and fell in love with “Hammy” the first week of classes. They were pinned on Valentine’s Day, 1961. While there, she was a member of Phi Mu sorority and was a cheerleader.

Angie and Hammy were blessed with 55 years of marriage until his passing in 2017.  Although she had deep Baptist roots, Angie joined Trinity on the Hill Methodist church when they returned to Augusta in 1964.  She faithfully served her beloved church in many roles, from youth leader to Sunday School teacher, to Altar Guild, including past chairman. She and Hammy were members of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School class.

Angie loved her community, friends, and family.  She was a Pink Lady at St. Joseph’s Hospital and served and chaired numerous committees for her children’s schools. She adored her grandchildren, never missing their sports events, recitals, or celebrations of any milestone. Her thoughtful notes encouraged so many over the years, as she was a gifted writer.  Tennis was one of her great passions.  Until injuries prevented her from playing, Angie was a “mean” doubles player.  She loved working outside in her gardens and flower arranging and was a member of Heritage Garden Club.

Family members include daughters Mary Leigh Kuhlke Harbin and husband Bertram Dykes Harbin, Jr.; Jennifer Kuhlke Reynolds and husband Stanley Charles Reynolds; and Vera Elsie “Sissy” Kuhlke Gardner and husband James Eaton Miller; and son-in-law James Collie Gardner III.  Angie is survived by brother-in-law William Bernhardt Kuhlke and wife Beth; her sister-in-law Barbara Kuhlke; nephew Tripp and nieces Chrislynne, Cindy, and Kathy.  She is preceded in death by her brother Edgar Paul Strange; brother-in-law Dessey Landrum Kuhlke; and nephews Brian and David.

“Mimi” was beloved by her six grandchildren Blythe Reynolds Robertson (Zach), Bertram Dykes Harbin III (Lauren), Frederick Hamilton Kuhlke Harbin (Susanna), Mary Hamilton Reynolds, Mary Angela Harbin and James Collie Gardner IV.  She was also blessed with five great grandchildren Pearson Wynn Harbin, Henley Hamilton Robertson, Frederick Hamilton Kuhlke Harbin, Jr., Bertram Dykes Harbin IV, and Leland Elizabeth Robertson.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, May 4th, 2024, at Trinity on the Hill Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Hearn officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity on the Hill Methodist Church, 1330 Monte Sano Ave, Augusta, GA, 30904.
