Augusta, GA – I’m broken hearted to share the sad news of the death of my husband Barry J. Ayres on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. We were blessed to have fifty-five memorable years together. He was the love of my life.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents Gene and EV Ayres, and his sister Paula Ayres.
He is survived by his wife: Margaret Ayres; sister: Vicki Mitchell; brothers: Lee Ayres and Pat Ayres; sister-in-law: Janice Ayres.
Barry was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on October 9, 1945. Being born into a military family, he lived in several states and Germany. Barry graduated from Butler High School in 1964 and Augusta College with a bachelor’s degree in 1969. He was an inspirational man who never met a stranger. He taught at Hephzibah High School in 1970, Sand Bar Ferry Jr. High in 1971, and his alma mater Butler High School from 1978-1994.
He absolutely loved teaching and has kept in touch with many of his former students. Barry loved all genres of music, was a history buff, and really enjoyed computer games. He also especially loved football and cowboy movies.
Barry’s life was marked by many obstacles, but he was a fighter and never gave up. He was fiercely determined to succeed, and he certainly did!
The funeral service will be held Monday, November 3, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Bellevue Memorial Gardens Chapel with the Very Rev. Billy J. Alford, Dean Emeritus, officiating.
