The family of Ben Grimm announces his passing on November 17, 2025, at home in McCormick, South Carolina. Born October 12, 1943, in Germany to Erna and Herbert Grimm, he immigrated with his family to Long Island, New York in 1951; eventually settling in Cold Spring Harbor.
After graduating high school, he enrolled in the University of Georgia’s animal husbandry program but left school to serve in the military. He was deployed to Vietnam where he acted as company clerk and volunteered for helicopter body recovery missions to honor his fellow soldiers and give their families closure. In 1964, while stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia, he met his future wife, Rosemary. They were married in a little chapel on June 17, 1967, on the Fort Gordon base after he returned from serving in Vietnam.
During his career, Ben worked as a machinist, tool and die maker, and mechanical engineer designing hospital equipment, namely a special hospital bed for burn victims. He was fiercely independent and did not suffer fools lightly; but was unceasingly generous and loyal to his friends and family…and he never met a dog he didn’t love.
Ben is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosemary; his children, Erika (William Gray) and Mathew (Robyn Suddeth) and his grandchildren: Hayden and Isla.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 20, 2025 at 11:00 AM in the Thomas Poteet & Son Chapel.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the veteran’s association of your choice.
