Cathleen Elizabeth Redmond

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Monday, June 30, 2025, Mrs. Cathleen Elizabeth Mary Tobin Redmond, 82, loving wife of 61 years to Col. James P. Redmond, U.S. Army, Retired.

Cathleen was born in Brooklyn, New York, and she was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church at Fort Gordon, GA.

Family members include her daughters: Mary Elizabeth Redmond Hutson, PhD. (Nick), and Shannon Redmond Feldman (Jason); son: James Peter Redmond, Jr.; grandchildren: Collin Redmond Hutson (Elizabeth), Conor Tobin Feldman, and Ryan Matthew Feldman; sister: Martha Mary Curry; and nephews: Robert Curry, Daniel Curry, and Christian Curry.

Cathleen and Jim grew up together in Brooklyn, and he fell in love with her when they were just three years old. While dating in high school, Cathleen and Jim created a secret code to say “I love you” away from the prying ears of parents (123). They were married in 1964, just days after Jim graduated college and was commissioned into the Army. Jim’s Army career took Cathleen and their three children to postings in Fort Bragg, NC (more than once), Fort Benning, GA, Monterey, CA, Concord, NH, Baumholder, Germany, and, finally, Fort Gordon, GA. Cathleen parented the kids alone during Jim’s deployments, trips to the field, and two tours in Vietnam. Her organizational skills, ability to make friends, touch of stubbornness, and practicality made her well suited to life as a military spouse.

Cathleen was a loving mother to her three children. She was relentless in her protection of them, proud of their accomplishments, and supportive of them in all of their endeavors. Cathleen was a dedicated Grandmother to her three grandsons and had a unique bond with each of them. She loved making every holiday a memorable occasion, and she began many family traditions that her children and grandchildren treasure.

In addition to taking care of her family, Cathleen spent her lifetime volunteering and caring for her community. Early on, she was a Red Cross Volunteer in the dispensary in Baumholder organizing CPR classes. Throughout her time in Augusta, she spent countless hours in service to her local parish and was always in her favorite pew at Mass on Sunday, usually well before anyone else arrived. She taught the 2nd grade First Communion CCD class for over 25 years, and she organized Troops Encounter Christ weekends for a decade. Cathleen was a Lay Eucharistic Minister and a Lector, and she was also responsible for the scheduling of both at weekly masses for many years. Most recently, she made and donated scores of knitted lap blankets for Veterans and baptismal blankets for christenings, along with crocheted hats for newborns.

When faced with difficulties throughout her life, Cathleen always managed them with aplomb and a sense of humor. Cathleen was a generous friend who never wanted to be the center of attention, but somehow always ended up there, usually focused on loudly recounting an entertaining story. For most of her life, her few biological relatives were geographically distant, so she created a large “found family” who were always welcome at her home and were often found around her table at holiday dinners.

Cathleen and Jim lived a life grounded by family, and she will always be loved for her wit, love of laughter, and independent spirit.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 3, 2925, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Thomas Poteet and Son.
