On Monday, January 5, 2026, CSM George Solomon Butler, U.S. Army (Ret.), entered into rest at the age of 69. George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, mentor, soldier, and friend. He was respected by many and loved deeply by all who truly knew him.
Born in Orangeburg, and raised in Eutawville, South Carolina, George was born to the late Daniel and Katura Butler. Even as a child, he exhibited presence and principle. Stubborn, when necessary, no-nonsense by nature, and unwavering in his integrity. Adaptable and strong, George approached life with discipline and purpose. While his commanding demeanor could be intimidating, those close to him knew a man who was caring, witty, funny, generous, and endlessly entertaining. He had a gift for leading, and lifting others, and he did so consistently and without fanfare.
George proudly served his country in the United States Army for thirty-one (31) years. A true soldier and leader, he was dedicated to service, excellence, and accountability, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major in 2007. Following his retirement, he continued his career serving his country, including fourteen (14) years with the National Security Agency, where his reliability, and insights were hallmarks of his work. George believed in doing things the right way, even when it was hard, and he held himself and others to that same standard.
While stationed at Fort Jackson, George met his wife, Patricia Butler, with whom he shared thirty-nine (39) years of marriage. Their life together was built on loyalty, understanding, forgiveness, and mutual respect.
Outside of work and service, George was multi-faceted and full of life. He was athletic, creative, adventurous, and wise. A lifelong Miami Dolphins fan, he remained loyal through every season. He was a work-aholic with intention, a leader by example, a man who showed up, and someone others could depend on without question. George was gracious, giving, approachable, and truly one of a kind.
In addition to his wife, Patricia Butler, George leaves to cherish his memory his children: Calvin Flynn (Cindy), Uquay Garrett (John), and Ariel Butler-Young (Chuck); his grandchildren: Desmond Butler, Leia Flynn, Darien Flynn, Bryson Flynn, Cylan Garrett, and John Garrett; and his siblings: Tommy Middleton, Neomia Butler Lee, John Butler (Geraldine), Nancy Butler Beard (Ronnie), James Butler (Teresa), and Felicia Butler Miles (Milton). He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, lifelong friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives were shaped by his guidance, humor, and example.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Katura Butler, and his sister, Rebecca Butler Jenkins.
George Solomon Butler lived an authentic life marked by service, strength, and wisdom. His legacy is not only in what he accomplished, but in the people he influenced, taught, protected, and loved.
