Dr. Collins graduated from Clermont High School in 1951. The day after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served as a Chief Gunner on the B-36 bomber, stationed in El Paso, Texas.
Following his military service, he attended Truett McConnell University in Cleveland, Georgia, where he met Betty, the “love of his life.” He graduated in 1956 and later attended Mercer University, graduating in 1958. Dr. Collins and Betty were married in Atlanta in June 1957.
He pursued theological studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, before completing his pre-medical studies at Duke University.

From 1971 to 1981, he led the Amputee Clinic at University Hospital.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Collins invested heavily in education and community leadership. He served as Vice Chairman and later Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Westminster Schools of Augusta.
In addition to his professional and civic service, Dr. Collins was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Augusta from 1962 until his death. He served the church in many capacities over the years, including deacon, adult and teenage boys Sunday School teacher, and usher.
Dr. Collins devoted his life to healing others—with skill, discipline, compassion, and conviction. His influence as a physician, leader, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, and man of faith will continue to be felt for generations.
