Elizabeth Lawless Brotherton, a lifelong Augusta resident, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, November 2, 2025, surrounded by family. She was 93. Ann, as most knew her, graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy along with Richard Lenz Brotherton, a young man she would one day describe as “the love of my life.” Ann attended Georgetown University in Washington, DC, earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1954. Soon after, she returned to Augusta where she and Richard were married. By 1968, the couple had seven children together. Her family was actively involved in community life on “The Hill” and her home was always an open door to friends and neighbors. Music was central to the family bond, including several years during which she and Richard helped lead the folk choir at St. Mary’s Church.
Professionally, Ann spent several years as a manager of the operating room at Talmadge Hospital. When she was 45, her family joined forces with her brother Harry’s family for a cross country sojourn to Boise, Idaho where they purchased and ran a beer and wine distribution business. During that decade Ann served as the operating room supervisor for the Boise VA Medical Center. After their children were grown, Ann and Richard returned to Augusta, and eventually took up residence on the same corner of Bellevue and Monte Sano Avenues where she was born and raised. She spent another seven years in nursing, before finally retiring from the Medical College of Georgia in 1994.
In retirement, she loved travelling to visit grandchildren, playing bridge and socializing with friends, and spending several lazy weeks each year at a condo she and Richard shared with friends in Tybee Island, a place familiar to both from their youth.
Ann is survived by her husband Richard and all seven of their children – Beth, Rich, Jenny, Chuck, Lucy, Phil, and David – along with their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
