Augusta - Francis Duane Grice, Jr., 90, of Augusta, Georgia, beloved husband to Sandra Louise Lewis Grice of 68 years, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025.
Born in Augusta on June 26, 1935, Duane was the son of the late Francis Duane Grice, Sr. and Roberta Hoffman Grice. He grew up in Augusta with a strong sense of family, community, and faith. A proud alumnus of Richmond Academy, Duane was a standout student-athlete, excelling in baseball, basketball, and football. His academic and athletic achievements earned him a full scholarship to the University of Georgia, where he met the love of his life, Sandra.
While at UGA, Duane continued to shine as a baseball player, competing from 1954 to 1957 and helping to lead the Bulldogs to an SEC Championship in 1954. He was honored as an All-SEC player in 1956, a recognition of his skill, dedication, and leadership on the field. Duane was recognized by the University of Georgia Baseball program for the UGA Baseball Athletic Achievement Award in 2022 as one of the best-of-the-best in program history.
After college, Duane answered the call to serve his country. He served honorably in the United States Army and Army Reserve, retiring with the rank of Captain. His sense of duty and discipline extended beyond the military into his professional life.
Duane enjoyed a distinguished 40-year career in the banking industry, where he built a reputation for integrity, sound judgement, and a deep commitment to helping others. He mentored many young professionals over the years and was respected by colleagues and clients alike.
Beyond his professional and athletic accomplishments, Duane was a dedicated civic leader. He actively participated in several local organizations, including the Georgia Bulldog Club, the Richmond County Development Authority Committee, and the Augusta Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also served as Past President of the Augusta Exchange Club, where he helped support numerous community initiatives and charitable causes.
Duane’s greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his devoted wife Sandra; his sister: Nancy Grice Phillips; his children: Russell (Melodie), Kelly, and Gary (Kim) and his grandchildren: Kristen Waugh (John), Corey Grice, Lauren Gregg, Alan Gregg, Duane Gregg (Lizz), Anna Knauer (Martin), Clayton Grice, and Addison Grice. He was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him endless joy.
Known for his quiet strength, humility, warm smile, and deep love for his family, Duane leaves behind a legacy of service, character, and unwavering devotion. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A private burial will be held at Westover Memorial Park for immediate family.
