Gary Dean Porterfield, 81, of Evans, Ga, was welcomed home by his heavenly Father on Saturday, August 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Gary was born the eldest son of Ralph and Audrey Porterfield in 1942, in Barnesville, Ohio. He graduated from Worthington High School and then went on to earn a BS in Biology at Ohio State University.
Coaching and teaching were some of his favorite memories. He was co-owner of TFE, Inc. before establishing Appletree Academy in the Martinez/Evans area. Many people know Gary had a deep love for the mountains, and as a result, he developed a log home community in Sevierville, Tennessee, where many family memories were made. Gary was a devoted member of Overcomers Outreach Center.
Gary enjoyed spending time at the beach, in the mountains, going to dinner and coffee dates with his kids, grandkids, and friends. Gary also loved working outside, reading and studying the Bible surrounded by his puppies Charlie, Oliver, and Hattie Mae. If you stopped by to visit with Gary, he would sit and talk with you as long as you wanted, reminding him of his childhood memories growing up on a dairy farm where friends and family often gathered. Gary was a kind hearted and generous man who will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Audrey Porterfield, of Worthington, Ohio.
Gary is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lynn Porterfield, his children Jamie (April) Porterfield, Amy (Wayne) Hattaway, stepsons Jordan (Jessi) Yates, and Colin Yates. Gary was known as Pawpaw by his grandchildren Lauren (John) Walsh, Leigh (Zack) Teffeteller, Canon Porterfield, Caden Porterfield, Tyler Hattaway, and Will Hattaway, and great grandchildren John Walsh, Eric Walsh, Katherine Walsh, Taylor Teffeteller, and Sutton Teffeteller. He is also survived by his brother, Ira (Sue) Porterfield, nieces Laura (Jeffrey) Tjaarda, Tera (Michael) Balog, mother-in-law Louise Mangum, sister-in-law Terri (Terry) Cook, brother-in-law Mark (Trendi) Vita, nieces Aiyana and Mikayla Coward, nephews Justin and Blake Vita.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024 in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, Ga. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 am, with the service following at 11:00 am.
