Augusta, GA - Mrs. Hodgie Shearin McGinty, 103, entered into rest on June 30, 2025.
Mrs. McGinty was born in Wood, NC in 1922. Like her siblings, she served her country during World War II, becoming a nurse in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She served at Camp Butner in North Carolina, taking care of prisoners of war. Following the war, she worked as an OBGYN nurse at various hospitals in Augusta, including Oliver General Hospital and Eugene Talmadge Hospital.
Known as Sherry to family and friends in Georgia, she and her husband were founding members of St. Mark Methodist Church. Mrs. McGinty was deeply involved in the life of the church, including the Fannie Roesel Circle, the Alter Guild and Young at Heart Singers.
Mrs. McGinty had a deep faith in God, loved her family, cherished her community and appreciated her caregivers.
She is survived by her sons: Herbert “Gene” McGinty, Jr. of Augusta; and Donald McGinty and his wife Suzanne McGinty, both of Augusta; daughter Carol McGinty Redfern and her husband Roy “Mac” Redfern, both of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Johnathan McGinty and his wife Julie McGinty, both of Watkinsville; Shearin “Neely” Redfern Westbrook and her husband Eric Westbrook, both of Lexington, SC; Stephen Redfern and his wife Lindsey Redfern, both of Charlotte, NC; and six great-grandchildren: Emma Kate, Roy, Denton, Laura, Morgan and McCauley.
Mrs. McGinty was preceded in death by her husband: Herbert “Mac” McGinty, Sr. of Augusta; parents: Henry Bunn Shearin and Rosa Mae Gupton Shearin of Wood, NC; and six brother and sisters.
A Visitation will be held at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors on Sunday, July 6, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Mark Global Methodist Church.
