Augusta, GA – Dr. Holland Victor Moore peacefully left us on December 3, 2025. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Jane, his children John (Ruth, Wesley 15) and Emily (Ali, Evren 7, Isla 4). Born in Shelby, NC on November 5, 1936, to Elizabeth, a nurse, and Dr. Ernest Victor Moore, he grew up watching his parents devote their lives to the healing of others. From them he inherited not only a vocation, but the steadfast, compassionate heart that would define his life.
Raised on the family farm, he learned the value of hard work, the joy of Sundays with his grandparents and extended family, and a lifelong love of the land which he tended through gardening with the same patience and care he offered his patients. Whether sharing advice or admiring what others were growing, he connected with people through his love of nature.
As a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wake Forest University and an AOA Society member of Bowman Gray Medical School, Victor entered a prestigious training program for general and thoracic surgery at New York Cornell Hospital studying with the pioneers of cardio thoracic surgery and even witnessing one of the first heart transplants in the United States. Drafted in 1970, he served proudly as chief of general surgeon at the 3rd Surgical Hospital in south Vietnam—years he later recalled as challenging, meaningful, and formative. Returning to his training, he met Jane Gannon, the love of his life, in the cardiac unit. Together, they made Augusta home cultivating a community of cherished friends.
His life’s calling was the healing of children with congenital heart defects - a vocation he embraced with extraordinary skill and an even greater measure of heart. He loved what he did and often claimed that he never worked a day in his life. At the Medical College of Georgia, he cared for every young patient as though they were his own child. His compassion was so instinctive that he was often found rocking babies in the ICU during the quiet hours of the night, a small but powerful reflection of his unwavering devotion. For 33 years he served tirelessly, never venturing far from home lest one of “his babies” should need him. Every loss weighed heavily on him, and he often said the longest, most painful walks of his life were those taken to share heartbreaking news with a waiting family.
A gentle and contemplative soul, Victor preferred listening over speaking. Beyond the hospital walls, he lived simply and joyfully - tending his garden, celebrating his wife and children, and savoring the everyday gifts of a blessed life. On the rarest occasion you may have even seen him cut loose on a dance floor. His wit and warm humor emerged softly, rewarding those patient enough to know him well. A consummate Southern gentleman, Victor delighted in people, treasured their stories, and found deep joy in the accomplishments of those he loved.
No words can fully capture the honor with which he lived, the steadfastness of his dedication, or the grace of his spirit. But those who knew him felt it - in the quiet strength of his presence, in the lives he healed, and in the hearts he left fuller than he found them. In every sense, he was a profoundly good and remarkable man, and his heart will be remembered for generations.
