Martinez, GA – James “Butch” Milton Poteet was called home to the Lord on April 26, 2026 in his Martinez home at age 79.
Born in Natchez, Mississippi on March 29th, 1947, Butch lived an illustrious life from beginning to end. He attended Louisiana State University where he played football, fanning the flames of his life-long love for the LSU Tigers. After a few stops along the way, he settled in Martinez, GA with his honey, Judy. Together, they eventually built their Augusta-based business, Team Industrial Specialists, and Butch solidified his reputation as a stand-up businessman in the area, becoming a friend to employees & clients alike. Butch also spent ample time at the Fish Camp, his Plum Branch, SC hub, where he enjoyed his hobbies with his family, friends, and the tight-knit community at Clarks Hill/Lake Thurmond. After spending his morning on the pontoon boat wrangling catfish & stripers, he’d light up the grill or smoker to serve up some of the best Texan or Cajun-inspired food this side of the Mississippi to enjoy with his guests later that day – all with an LSU football game on all day long. Lover of fishing, cooking, and sports, he first & foremost loved his people and sharing those experiences with them. Butch was a proud son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many – all of whom were blessed to have him in their lives.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George Hulin Poteet & Elaine Haygood Poteet, as well as his siblings, Emmett Kenney, Shelby Kenney, and Shirley Poteet Bergman. He is survived by his wife, Judy Conquest; his sister, Pam Bridley (Scott); his children, James “Jim” Poteet II, Janan Van Fossan (Lisa), & Ronda Van Fossan Spitzer (Mark); his grandchildren, Ian Van Fossan, Jeryl Van Fossan (Kelsey), Rhiana Van Fossan Hoover (Bradley), & Miranda Spitzer; his great-grandchildren, Evangeline Van Fossan, Bradley Hoover III, & Corrie Hoover; his beloved cats, Gracie & Rocky; and many more loving family members & friends.
The Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Details will be shared by the family at that time.
