Evans, GA – James Lewis Stephens passed to heaven peacefully on February 18, 2026 while living with his family in Evans GA. He was born in Gadsden, AL on August 31,1939 and enjoyed a life full of sweet memories with his beautiful family and friends. James was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Edith Stephens; his brother Carl Stephens; and his bride Janet Sherer Stephens. He is survived by his two loving daughters, Meredith Ashworth and Mary Kathleen Exley; his grandson, Stephen Cole Exley and his son-in-law, Stephen Exley.

James graduated from high school in Gadsden, Alabama and went to college at the University of Alabama, where he received his degree in mechanical engineering, and met his beautiful wife, Janet. James enjoyed a long and productive career in mechanical engineering working for various paper manufactures including Gulf State Paper (Tuscaloosa, Al.), St. Regis (Jacksonville, Fl. and Pensacola, Fl.), Georgia Kraft (Macon, GA) and Inland Container/ International Paper (Rome, Ga.) After his retirement in 2001, he and Janet retired to Panama City Beach, Fl. Janet Stephens passed July 7, 2014, and then James moved to Evans, GA in 2018 to be with his daughter, Mary Kathleen Exley, son in law, Stephen Exley and his grandson, Stephen Cole Exley.

James Lewis or to many of his dear friends, “Jimmy Lee”, was adored by anyone that was fortunate enough to spend any time with him or to hear his stories that would create so much joy and laughter. He had an infectious smile and had a magnanimous and giving spirit. I know I was blessed to call him my father! He will be greatly missed, but now we take comfort in the fact that he is finally at peace.
