Janet Mulherin Gibson

Janet Mulherin Gibson, RN, age 78 of Evans, GA passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 29, after an extended illness.

Janet's parents were Dr. Joseph L. Mulherin and Mary Alice Key Mulherin. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Alice King (Tom), and her son, Travis C. Gibson (Emily). Janet is survived by her husband, Robert (Bob) Gibson, her daughter, Amanda G. DeSilva, her son, Andrew M. Gibson, six grandchildren, Austin DeSilva (Teaghan), Brent DeSilva (Monika), Brody DeSilva (Melaina), Georgiana Gibson, Catherine Gibson, and James David Gibson. Her brother Joseph Mulherin MD (Cindy), her sister, Estelle M. Duncan (Byron), ex daughter in law, Brandy Jones. Special mention: Hailee (Hospice CNA), Christie (Hospice chaplain), and Onnie (Hospice RN).

Janet began to show early signs of dementia in 2018. At the time, she and Bob had lived in Appling for 17 years. They moved to the "Lake House" upon Bob's retirement from Shell. As her dementia worsened, they relocated to Evans in 2020. In October 2022, Janet was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Southeast Hospice began to manage her “home" care in May 2024. Knowing that Janet would have wanted to remain in her home, Bob, expertly guided by the remarkably talented Hospice employees, became her caregiver. With Bob, being a notoriously slow learner, the hospice nurse's, nurse's assistant, etc. had their hands full. Turns out that Janet was in capable hands.

Janet was born in Augusta. Educated in Catholic schools, graduated from Aquinas, BA degree from Women's College of Georgia in Milledgeville. Shortly after graduation, Janet and Bob were married in March 1969. For the next 34 years, they moved fairly often, living in Florida, Illinois, Hawaii, Georgia and South Carolina. While in Marietta, Ga Janet elected to go back to nursing school, earning her RN at Kennesaw State at the age of 46. She had found her calling, finally settling on school nursing for Columbia County. She was good at that, being selected as the CSRA school nurse of the year for 2003. She was also selected as the "Giving Your Best" winner for October of the same year. She would be uncomfortable if either of those things were mentioned. She loved the kids...and they loved her.

Janet was a woman of grace. Of unwavering faith. Quick to smile. A friend that a friend would like to have. She loved to walk, loved the mountains and the beach, loved to dance, loved to cook, loved to browse through thrift stores searching for bargains, loved having her grandsons visit for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Loved Life!

The final resting place for her ashes will be the Columbarium at Saint Teresa of Avila church in Grovetown. The ceremony will be at a later date and will be private.
