Mrs. Jean Lay Owen, wife of the late Marion C. Owen, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at The Pavilion at Brandon Wilde, Evans, GA.
The family will have visitation at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 on Sunday, September 1st, from 1 pm to 3 pm. A celebration of her life will be held at Brandon Wilde on Sunday, September 1st for residents of Brandon Wilde.
Jean was raised in Pendleton, SC and graduated from Winthrop College. She relocated to Kingsport, TN to begin work at Tennessee Eastman Company. It was there she met her husband, and they raised their family. She was involved in numerous volunteer and church activities in Kingsport such as PTA, WMU, Sunday School teacher, Red Cross volunteer and Meals on Wheels. She loved to work in the yard, tend to her wildflower gardens, read and do crossword puzzles. She traveled with family and friends enjoying sites across the United States, especially the National Parks.
Jean relocated and lived in Augusta for the past 23 years. She volunteered her time to work with the English as a Second Language program at First Baptist Church as well as served on the Volunteer Board at University Hospital. She moved to Brandon Wilde in 2017.
Jean is survived by her children, Robert M. Owen (Linda) of Huntsville, AL and Russell A. Owen (Pam) and her granddaughter, Katelyn Owen of Martinez, GA, her sister, Suzanne Lay Fletcher of Asheville, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband and her son, Thomas Freeman Owen and her siblings, Betty Harris, Nancy Moore and James F. Lay, Jr.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to all the staff at Brandon Wilde for the love and care they gave Jean.
