James L. “Jim” Dent, a pioneering figure in professional golf and a beloved pillar of the Augusta, Georgia community, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025 at the age of 85. His journey from humble beginnings in Augusta to becoming a dominant force on the PGA and Senior PGA Tours is a testament to his extraordinary talent, perseverance, and quiet strength.
Born on May 9, 1939, Jim was the son of Tom Ramsey and Carrie in Appling Ga. After both his parents died before he was a teenager, he moved and grew up on the “Sand Hill” in Augusta GA where access to golf for young Black men was limited. Despite the obstacles, he found his way onto the fairways of Augusta Municipal Golf Course affectionately known as “The Patch” where his passion for the game and natural ability quickly became undeniable. Against the approval of his sister and caretaker Mary, Jim began caddying at Augusta Country Club and later Augusta National Golf Course.
Jim turned professional in 1966, blazing a trail in a sport that, at the time, offered few opportunities for Black athletes. Though he never competed in The Masters, a painful reflection of the times, he remained an indomitable presence in the game. He found his greatest competitive success on the Senior PGA Tour, where he amassed 12 career victories, becoming one of the Tour’s most consistent long hitters and most respected competitors.
Beyond his victories, Jim Dent’s legacy was cemented in the inspiration he gave to future generations. He became a symbol of perseverance and quiet dignity, a role model to countless aspiring golfers, especially young African Americans who saw in him a path forward in a game that often made them feel unwelcome.
To his family and those who knew him best, Jim was more than a golfer. He was a devoted grandfather, father, mentor, and friend. His wit, wisdom, and unwavering humility left a lasting imprint not only in clubhouses across the country but in the hearts of those privileged to share time with him.
Jim joins his brother Sam Dent, Lipot Dent Bertha Reid, Tom Ramsey Dent Jr, and Mary in their eternal rest. He is survived by his sister Josephine Dent. Children Charlene, Radiah, James, Victoria, Joshua, and Joseph. Grandchildren Wykeshia, Andre, James, Kennedy, Jayden, London, Andrew and Majesti. Great grandchildren Iyana, Paiton, Austin, and Andre (Travys).
Jim has a legacy that lives on not only through his family but in every young player who believes there’s a place for them in the game of golf.
A memorial service will be held on May 19, 2025 at Paine College Gilbert Lambouth Chapel where family, friends, and members of the golfing community will gather to celebrate a life that broke barriers, built bridges, and inspired generations.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Paine College Golf Program and The EPOCHS TOUR and African American Golf History.
