Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Joanne Seegars Cain, 95.
A lifelong educator, Joanne taught at Augusta Technical College, Williamsburg County (1st grade), Horry County (1st, 4th, and 7th grades), Chesterfield County (1st and 5th grades), and she worked as the Reading Coordinator for Edgefield County and Williamsburg County. During her tenure, the Edgefield County Reading Labs received a national award for being the #1 Labs in the USA.
Joanne enjoyed dancing, flower arranging, reading, writing plays, dressing to the nines, and wearing hats. She was an organist, pianist, and soloist at Wampee United Methodist Church, and she was a member of the Yaupon Garden Club of North Myrtle Beach and the Andrews SC Garden Club. In addition, she was a member of the Chesterfield County, Horry County, Williamsburg County, and Edgefield County local Education Associations, The South Carolina Education Association, the National Education Association, and the International Reading Association.
Her accomplishments included: SC School Bell Award, Teacher of the Year at Augusta Technical College (twice), President of the McBee PTA, Secretary of the Horry County Wampee PTA, delegate to the Representative Assembly for the NEA Convention for SC, Ambassador to China for Education from Augusta Tech, published author of a preschool learning book, Miss McBee, SC, McBee High School Homecoming Queen, Mrs. Congeniality in the Mrs. SC Pageant, and first runner up in the Mrs. Augusta Pageant.
Family members include her son: Myron Wright Cain; daughter: Jodi Cain Smith Hancock (Donnie); grandson: Jeffrey Stephen Smith, Jr.; and sister: Jackie Seegars Teal (Allen).
She was preceded in death by the father of her children: Herman E. Cain, Jr.; sons: Herman “Earl” Cain III and Anthony “Bart” Cain; parents: Jack and Polly Seegars; brothers: Robert Seegars, Rex Seegars, Jim Seegars; sister: Jennie Pate; son-in-law: Jeffrey Stephen Smith; and grandson: Joseph Cain Smith.
The funeral service will be held Monday, March 2, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with W. Brent Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Bobby Teal, Randy Seegars, Chris Lunsford, and Cody Pate.
