Joe Poteet, entered the Kingdom of Heaven surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Joe, 78, loving husband of Mel would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in a few months.
Joe was raised in Hephzibah, Georgia. He was a member of Hephzibah Methodist Church. Joe loved to share his love for school and how he had perfect attendance kindergarten through twelfth grade. He was a Hephzibah High graduate, class of 1965. He also continued his education in college. Joe served his country in the United States Army. After many years he retired from Fort Gordon as a Sports Director.
To know Joe was to love Joe! His smile and laughter was contagious. Joe loved to tell stories and enlighten you with his many exciting adventures.
He was a faithful hunter in all seasons especially deer, dove, and turkey. Joe loved to be on a dove field surrounded by friends who he loved like family. He loved to fish whether with family, friends, or with the love of his life. Joe loved to cheer on his Dawgs every Saturday in his favorite chair. Most of all Joe loved his family big and turned every minute spent into a story.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Mel, his son Brad (Kelli), and his grandchildren Gracie and Rhett. His bonus grandchildren who called him Papa, Papa Joe, and Bo. He is also survived by his sister Mary Ann Owens (Billy), sister in love Charlotte Poteet, and nephews Trey Poteet III and Andrew Poteet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Dean and Mary Snell Poteet, and brother, Dean Poteet.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. A memorial service celebrating Joe’s life will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 at 3:00 P.M. at Magnolia Cemetery with Rev. Gary McWhorter officiating.
