Evans, GA – John James (Jack) Benjamin passed away April 17, 2025, after a short illness. He had been with family and friends who loved him very much. Jack was 95 years old and would have celebrated his 96th birthday in June of this year.
Jack is survived by two children, Katherine Elizabeth “Beth”; Parrish (Hugh) of Appling, Georgia and David Alan Benjamin (Susan) of Suwanee, Georgia; five grandchildren, Ben Parrish(Heather), Jon Parrish (Emily), Chris Parrish (Deanna), Lauren Benjamin Parker (Matt), and Emily Benjamin Richer (Mark), and eight great grandchildren, Ethan Parrish, Elizabeth Parrish, Ryan Parrish, Emma Parrish, Katelyn Parrish, Carter Parrish, Carson Parrish, and Jason Schingler; four nephews, and one niece. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Brown Benjamin (Evans, Georgia), his parents, John Jacob Benjamin and Alice Wichern Benjamin (New York City, NY) and his sister and brother-in-law Robert H. Meuser and Alice B. Meuser (Hickory, North Carolina).
Jack served in the United States Army Infantry 2nd Division (The Indian Head Division) 2nd Signal Corps in the Korean War. He spent most of his tour of duty providing communications to the front lines of The Battle of Old Baldy in 1952. Jack returned home to Columbia, South Carolina near the end of the Korean War and started his career in credit management with Noland Company and worked there until retirement. Jack and Harriet relocated to Augusta, Georgia in 1961 before moving to the Atlanta area in 1970 and then, back to Augusta after retirement in 2000.
While living in the Atlanta area, Jack became a member of the Southern Bicycle League and had great times pedaling with friends. He went on great adventures riding all over North Georgia, the Bike Ride Across Georgia (BRAG), Rides from Atlanta to Panama City, the entire Blue Ridge Parkway and many more. Some of his bicycle friends shared memories of his organization of the Blue Ridge bike rides. Several members shared memories of Jack during that time. One statement was that he and his wife were thought of as one of those “one word” couples on these rides because “you did not think of one without the other.” They also spoke of his kindness to others during these rides stating that they “felt safe on long rides with Jack and always kept an eye on everyone.”
Jack was a member of Martinez United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his retirement at home in Evans, Georgia, and loved spending with his family. In 2021, Jack and Harriet transitioned to assisted living. Jack was fortunate to have loving and caring staff members in the assisted living facility. Many thanks to Scarlett who became such a good friend and continued to visit him after he left. The family would like to especially thank his personal care-giving team who helped “Jack Jack” live a full life to his passing. He would tell them he loved them, and they loved him.
Many thanks and appreciation go to Sandra McCord, Tammy Simmons, Sandra Taylor, Sandra Jackson, Kim Hill, India Drake, and Tamara Williamson, the staff from Caring from the Heart, the staff of Enhabit Hospice, and Georgia House Calls for the love and care given to “Jack Jack.”
