John Christopher Howerdd

John Christopher Howerdd, Sr. entered eternal rest surrounded by love and family on May 20, 2025. A father, grandfather, friend, and artist, Chris’ calming presence and creative approach to life will be missed and remembered.

Chris was born December 1 st , 1956 in Augusta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene M. Howerdd, Jr. and mother, Martha Armstrong Howerdd. 

He is survived by the mother of his children LuAnne Vickery Howerdd, his daughter Leah Howerdd Gaudin (Josh) and his son John Christopher Howerdd, Jr. (Benna). Chris “Papa Cree” was a devoted and loved grandfather to his three grandchildren, Rooks,

Wells and Wes. He is also survived by his brother Eugene “Trey” M. Howerdd III (Lisa, deceased), Elizabeth Howerdd Stargel (Rick), Katherine Howerdd Price (Benny, deceased), Maura Howerdd Burden (Mark) and Lauren Howerdd (Rachel). The family extends special thanks to SouthEast Hospice.

After attending Hawaii Loa College, Chris married LuAnne Vickery and moved to Pasadena, CA where they had 2 children (Leah and John) and he attended graduate school at Art Center School of Design. As his career in graphic design took shape, Chris started the marketing communications firm Phorum in Augusta, GA with longtime friend and photographer Drake White. Upon being acquired by Orbit Network, they moved operations to Sausalito, CA, where Chris thrived as an artist for 20 years before retiring in Sapphire Valley, NC in 2020.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday June 6, 2025 at 1:30 PM at St Jude Catholic Church in Sapphire, NC followed immediately by a graveside burial at The Memorial Cemetery at St Jude Catholic Church. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone. In memory of Chris, take some time to observe the natural beauty in our world, preferably listening to Steely Dan or Stevie Wonder.
