Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Mr. John Edward Markwalter, 96, loving husband of the late Louise D. Markwalter.
John was born in Charleston, WV to the late Raphael and Katharine Markwalter. He was a member of Sacred Heart and St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church. In 1974 he was bestowed in the Knights of St. Gregory. He served in the United States Army and retired as Editor of The Southern Cross which is the official newspaper of the Diocese.
Surviving family members include his children: Katharine Markwalter and William M. Markwalter (Kathy); and grandchildren: Michael Lee Markwalter (Melanie) and Paul Edward Markwalter; sister-in-law: Lois D. Kendall; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Tony Markwalter, brother, Ray Markwalter (Marge), and sister, Katherine M. Franke (Bill).
The funeral Mass will be held Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Fr. Mark Ross celebrant. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, 1420 Monte Sano Avenue, Augusta, GA 30904.
A Rosary will be held Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M. and the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at www.thomaspoteet.com
