John G. Sheffield Jr. of Evans, Georgia walked freely into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family. No longer bound by the troubles of this world, he now lives in the freedom and splendor of Heaven.
John was born and raised in Willacoochee, Ga., near the Alapaha River or as he called it “The Nile of Georgia”. It was there; he gained his lifelong love for the outdoors and carried this love making lifetime memories at Little River Plantation. He would meet the love of his life, Diane Riggs in Atlanta in 1973 and later that year they were married.
John and Diane moved several times before landing in the Augusta area in 1982. In 1983, he cofounded Riverside Forest Products, where he continued to work as a lumber broker until his passing. A true Southern gentleman, he was often seen sporting his signature fedora along with an infectious smile. Known affectionately to many as Brummy or The Brum, Daddy John or Papa, he never said goodbye without telling you that he loved you to the bone and to “be particular.” His love for his friends could only be surpassed by the unwavering love he felt for his family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Diane and their children; daughter, Heather (Joey) Barrs of Belize and son, Nick (Emily) Sheffield of Augusta. John was “Papa” to his seven grandchildren; Sophia Barrs, Lillie Sheffield, Lucy Sheffield, Jessica Barrs, Jeffrey Barrs, Mae Sheffield and Emily Barrs. He is also survived by his twin sister, Joan (Hampton) Giddens; brother, Butch (Norma) Kirkland; sister, Cynthia (Herbert) Haisten and his nieces Jessica Giddens and Jasmine (Tyler) Bell. He is preceded in death by his parents; Aubrey Lee (Paul) Kirkland, John (Lottie) Sheffield Sr.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Quest Church in Grovetown with the Rev. John Kenney officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the church.
