Evans, GA – Entered into rest on Thursday, January 4, 2024, Mrs. Johnnie Holmes Maher, 95, loving wife of the late SFC (ret) Ronald R. Maher.

Johnnie was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Lee Stephen Holmes and Selma Moye Holmes. Along with her husband she gave many hours of her life to serving veterans. In recognition for her service, she was President MOCA 1990 - 91, Grand MOCA of Georgia 1999 – 2000. She was also Supreme Auxiliary President of the year 1998 - 99 and Auxiliary President of the Year 1998-99. She had the honor of representing the state of Georgia through the VFW649 to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier three times for Veterans Day. 

In addition to service to her country, Johnnie was a wonderful, doting mother. This extended to her role as “Gubby” or grandmother to 7 grandchildren. Her station wagon was always loaded with kids and bicycles on Friday afternoon at St. Mary’s School. She and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the USA and sailed 14 cruises throughout the USA and the world. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Family members include her children: Wanda Chilton Barnard (Benjamin), Patricia Chilton Johnson and Douglas Lee Chilton (Simona); grandchildren: Julia Elizabeth Golosky, Michael Gary Johnson, Jr., Walter Joseph Golosky II (Holli), Elizabeth Johnson Phung (Tien), James Douglas Chilton, Caroline Johnson Douglas (Ryan) and Samuel Elliott Chilton and nine great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Johnnie was preceded in death by three brothers Lee S. Holmes, Jr., James Edwin Holmes, and Durwood P. Holmes.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Jack Foley officiating. Interment will be private at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306.
