Joseph “Joey” Braxton Hutcheson, Jr., 70 years old, of Evans, Georgia, passed on January 9, 2026 from Merkel cell carcinoma.
He was born at Fort Rucker Alabama on July 2, 1955 to Anne Bruce Hutcheson and Joseph “Braxton” Hutcheson Sr.. He grew up in Vidalia, Georgia and graduated from Vidalia High School in 1971. While in high school he studied woodworking and design. After high school he started working at Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant in Baxley, Georgia. He continued his work in industrial design at Plant Vogtel. Later he learned the Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) system and this led to him meeting the love of his life, Cathy Stafford. Their playful banter at work turned into a romance that led to them getting married in 2003.
Cathy and Joey enjoyed golfing, riding motorcycles, and traveling to Hilton Head together. They even went into business together printing signs. As partners they had fun and took care of one another. Joey did just that when Cathy was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed in 2013.
While Joey was a great husband he was also a loving son to his mom. He helped move his mom up from Florida to live near him in Evans. He visited often and was with her when she passed in July at 97 years old.
Joey was also a wonderful brother to Cassidy and Jan. Cassidy recalls his patience while he let his older sister push him around in her baby buggy. Cassidy also loved his fashion sense (cowboy boots, leather jacket, and jeans) and would steal his jeans to wear which drove him crazy.
Joey was also a fun and caring uncle to his nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nephews. He loved spending time with them. A few months ago he was playing basketball, baseball, and “wrestling” over a favorite arm chair with his great niece and nephew.
If you were to visit Lake Greenwood in South Carolina, Rack and Grill, or Doc’s Porchside in Augusta, Georgia you will find friends of Joey. They enjoyed his sense of humor and kindness. He enjoyed traveling with friends to Nascar races and was close enough often to be considered family to them as well.
Joey will be missed for his loving nature, patience, and wit. He was strong and sentimental, he was funny and serious, he was hardworking yet knew how to relax during his retirement from Parsons. Joey was many things to many people and he will be missed.
Joey was preceded in death by his beloved wife Cathy Hutcheson. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jan Brown Crain of Ormond Beach, Florida, and mother Anne Hutcheson of Evans, Georgia. Joey is survived by his sister Cassidy Coffari (Enrico) of Cerqueto, Italy, nephew Cameron Allen Brown, Sr. (Kathleen) of Augusta, Georgia and his niece Alison Lamar Brown (Greg) of Decatur, Georgia.
At Joey’s request no funeral service will be held.
