Judy Whitworth Groves

Judy Whitworth Groves, 83, entered into rest on Saturday, October 4, 2025. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Married for nearly sixty years, Judy cherished her family and leaves behind a legacy of service, integrity, and unconditional love. She met life’s challenges with faith, humor, and grace.

A native of Columbus, Georgia, Judy graduated from Auburn University. She met her husband, Bill, when he was stationed at Fort Benning. As a Pennsylvania native, he was immediately charmed by her southern accent. As an army wife, Judy became the anchor of her family, managing moves across the country and the world before settling in Martinez, Georgia. She volunteered at military base hospitals and her children’s schools, taught Sunday School, and led Scout troops. Wherever they were stationed, Judy created a sense of home and belonging for her family.

Judy was also a dedicated teacher for more than twenty years, most recently teaching at Evans Middle School. She had a passion for history, and her classroom could rival a museum exhibit. She kept a closet full of artifacts and teaching materials from around the world to bring history to life for her students. She encouraged hands-on projects and enthusiastically led field trips across Georgia, even with middle schoolers.

After retiring from the Columbia County school system, Judy embraced being a grandmother with boundless energy and love. She transformed their home into a haven for her grandchildren, with indoor and outdoor play areas filled with toys from multiple generations plus a few new additions each year. She kept a bag packed and could quickly be on the road if needed to help with a sick grandchild or simply to visit. She also enjoyed taking her grandchildren on special trips creating lasting memories.

She is survived by her son, Bill Groves (Amy); daughter, Amy Rooks (Jason); four grandchildren; her sister; several beloved cousins and close friends who were like family. She was preceded in death by her husband LTC William C. Groves earlier this year and her parents, James and Elizabeth Whitworth.

A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.
