Julio Enrique Romero-Mesa

Julio Enrique Romero-Mesa, lovingly known as Abuelito, passed peacefully, surrounded by love, after 96 remarkable years of life, devotion, and unwavering commitment to family and faith.

Born in Colombia, Julio lived a life defined by courage, sacrifice, and deep love. In 1952, he met the love of his life, Inés - his “mi Cielo” and “mi Reina.” They married in 1956 and together built a life rooted in faith, resilience, and partnership. Leaving behind everything familiar, they ventured to a new country with nothing but determination and each other, creating a legacy that would span generations.

Julio was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His life reflected a steadfast love - first for the Lord, and through that, a deep and enduring love for his wife, Inés, spanning more than 70 years. Together, they filled their home with music, laughter, dancing, and stories. More than anything, his example of faithful living and love for God will continue to resonate for generations to come.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Inés Romero; his son, Julio Enrique Romero-Ospina, and daughter, Carole Upshaw Romero; and his sister, María Helena Romero-Mesa, his only surviving sibling.

His cherished grandchildren are Alexandra Gabrielle Romero; Jorge Alberto Romero; Andrés Enrique Romero (wife, Sheneil); MacKenzie Lee Cundey; David Hamilton McDaniel; Paul Edward Cundey; Christian Dean Romero; Lawrence Ross McDaniel; Brittany Weathers McDaniel; Lindsey Rahn McDaniel; Daniel Prieto; and Joshua Prieto. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Georgia Marie Cundey; Caroline Elizabeth Cundey; James Ross McDaniel; Lawrence Maximilian McDaniel; Sullivan Elizabeth McDaniel; and Louise Lee Cundey.

He is also lovingly remembered by his nephews and nieces: Adriana María Romero Carrillo; Juan Alberto Romero Carrillo; Diego Mauricio Romero Carrillo; Clara Inés Romero Carrillo; and Julio César Cardona Romero.

He was preceded in death by his father, Julio Romero Zuleta; his mother, María Josefa Mesa Álvarez; and his siblings, Alberto José Romero Mesa and Marta Magdalena Romero Mesa.

He also leaves behind a large and cherished extended family through his brothers and sisters and their families - each of whom carries a piece of his legacy forward.

Those who knew Abuelito will remember his strength, his quiet wisdom, and his deep love for family. Where Mamaines brought laughter and stories, Abuelito brought steadiness, protection, and an unmatched devotion that anchored the family.

Above all, Julio was a man of faith. He trusted in the Lord through every season of life and now rests in eternal peace.

“Well done, good and faithful servant... Enter into the joy of your Lord.” - Matthew 25:23

Though he is no longer with us, his love, his example, and his legacy will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew him.

Sus queridos nietos son Alexandra Gabrielle Romero; Jorge Alberto Romero; Andrés Enrique Romero (esposa, Sheneil); MacKenzie Lee Cundey; David Hamilton McDaniel; Paul Edward Cundey; Christian Dean Romero; Lawrence Ross McDaniel; Brittany Weathers McDaniel; Lindsey Rahn McDaniel; Daniel Prieto; y Joshua Prieto.
