Dr. Kathleen Mood McKie entered into rest on Monday, December 22, 2025, at her home in Augusta, Georgia. She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Virgil Cranston McKie; their daughters, Kathleen Tarrant McFarlane McKie (Thomas Cathey) and Erin McKie Addington (Tony Addington); and her beloved grandchildren, Bridgett Grace Addington, Channing Pierce Addington, Charles McFarlane Cathey, and Peter McFarlane Cathey. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Mood Broome; her brother, John Mood; and Copper, her Yorkshire Terrier.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. George McFarlane Mood Jr. and Elizabeth Tobin Mood; her sister, Elizabeth McFarlane Mood Seagran; her brother, George McFarlane Mood III; and many treasured pets—including a squirrel she lovingly raised for many years.
A native of Charleston, South Carolina, raised on James Island, Dr. McKie held a lifelong love of the ocean, a passion she joyfully shared with her children and grandchildren. She graduated from the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina. Following medical school, she served her country as a Captain in the United States Army at Fort Bliss, Texas. After relocating to Augusta in 1982, she dedicated more than three decades to caring for children with sickle cell disease at the Medical College of Georgia. She also served as Associate Dean of Student Affairs, advising countless medical students and residents on their career paths.
In addition to her career as a pediatrician, Dr. McKie was a Master Gardener who cultivated more than 450 rose bushes at her home. For decades, her roses graced weddings, funerals, proms, and the homes of her friends. She never met a stranger and was unfailingly generous with her time and her many talents. She played a formidable game of canasta, boiled shrimp to perfection, and could shell boiled peanuts faster than anyone anywhere.
