Magdalena "Maggie" Lewis

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Monday, May 4, 2026, Mrs. Magdalena “Maggie” Lewis, 97, loving wife of the late James Leroy Lewis.

Maggie was born in Germany in the small town of Kahl a/Main to Karl and Katharine Zinke. She grew up during the turmoil of the world-wide depression and the destruction of World War II and its aftermath. She was the epitome of the strong, independent woman as she, her mother and younger sister struggled to survive as her father had been killed while serving in the German army. She met her future husband, James (Jim), after the War when he was stationed in Germany as part of the occupying force. She embraced being an Army wife and supported her husband as he was overseas during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. The adventures they had could fill a book. They were blessed with two children, Mary and Richard, and they too experienced some of the adventures that came with being part of a military family.

Maggie loved her church, family and friends. She lived a long and incredibly interesting life and at the end she was at peace looking forward to a joyful reunion with the love of her life Jim and her daughter Mary.

Family members include her son Richard (Mary), son-in-law Dale, grandchildren Chris (Jennifer), Traci, Jeff, Heather (Neal), Michael, Spenser (Kelsey), Nathan (Caitlin), Bryan (Jordan), Austin (Deidre), Stephen (Amy) and twelve great grandchildren.

She will be missed.

The memorial service will be held Friday, May 15, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church with The Rev. Terri Degenhardt officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 A.M., at the church.
