Marta N. Wold
Marta Newton Wold died peacefully on July 31, 2025. She was the beloved wife of Lt. Col. Henry Edward Wold (USMC), who preceded her in death in 2019, and the dear mother to Andrew H. Wold (Evans, GA) and Christine W. Dexter (El Cerrito, CA).
Born in Troy, NY on March 14, 1932, Marta was the eldest child of Miles C. Newton, a civil engineer, and Margaret Aylmer Newton. In addition to her children, Andrew and Christine (Matthew Dexter), she is survived by her brothers Richard M. Newton (Sharon) and Roger Hafford (Jamie) and sister-in-law Nancy Newton. She was preceded in death by her siblings John C. Newton (Nancy) and Christine Newton, DDS.
A steadfast sister, Marta helped take care of her younger siblings when her mother endured cancer and passed away in 1954. Marta graduated cum laude with a BA in mathematics in 1953 from Immaculate Heart College in Hollywood, CA. She went on to have a career as a mathematician and associate engineer in the aeronautical industry in southern California and a computer programmer at IBM in New York City and Washington DC.
After marrying in 1961 and becoming a mother, Marta left her career to parent her young children while her husband served in Vietnam. When Henry returned from Vietnam, the family moved to Denmark for Henry’s next assignment with NATO Baltic Approaches. When back in Washington DC, Marta earned a MS in Library Science from Catholic University in 1974. The family relocated to Darien, CT soon thereafter when Henry retired from the USMC.
Marta led a life marked by quiet strength, intellect, humor, and dedication to family and friends. She enjoyed returning to southern CA to attend college reunions and weddings with her lifelong best friends Connie Gallagher, Dolores Fritzsche, Liz O’Brien, Joan McCormick, and Lynn Holmes. She delighted in collecting antiques, maintaining her beloved 1860 farmhouse in CT, and celebrating holidays in her beautiful home. She appreciated living close to New York City and took frequent trips with family and friends to Carnegie Hall, museums, and Broadway shows.
After retirement, Marta and Henry took pleasure in many bike and river barge tours through Europe, collecting miles and memories. They cherished spending time with Marta’s brother Richard’s growing family in Augusta, GA — especially when there was an opportunity to go to practice rounds of the Masters Tournament or to the graduations and weddings of her nieces and nephews.
In 2019, after her husband’s passing, she relocated to Augusta, GA to be close to her son who retired there, and her brother’s family which includes many young grandnieces and grandnephews.
A funeral mass with be held at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church in Augusta on Friday, August 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
