Geraldine “Gerry” Bailey, a kind and loving wife, daughter, sister and aunt left this earth for her heavenly home on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Harborview Nursing Home in Augusta, GA. She had been a guest there since 2016. Prior to that, she lived on Tubman Home Road for over 30 years with her husband, George T. Bailey, then, after his death, with her sister, Carlene Usry Murphy.
Gerry, as she was always called, has a twin, Earldine Usry Jackson, who was her twin in every way twins are twins. Their parents were Carl and Sarah Usry. They were truly each other’s heartbeat and always referred to as ‘the twins’. Earldine now lives in Hartselle, AL but the heart string holding them together was never broken. Weekly calls and visits kept them close. They were born in Washington, GA on April 10, 1940, and, coming to Augusta as newborns, were admitted to University Hospital where they would spend nearly a year. Gerry would live the remainder of her 84 years in Augusta. In 1949, the twins were the first children served by the Augusta School of Speech Correction, Inc. sponsored by the Junior League of Augusta at Davidson Elementary School. Due to the lack of attention to the needs of special children, the twins were underserved during their school age years. Gerry, without children of her own, spent her adult years caring for her mother, sister, niece and nephew. She was a believing Christian, living her simple life as Jesus taught us to love and serve one another. She was often at her mother’s and sister Carlene’s houses. The famous saying when anyone could not find something was, “I don’t know where it is, Aunt Gerry was here today.” Gerry always put things where she thought they should go. She had a stubborn streak but was always kind and gentle. She never weighed over 89 pounds.
Preceding Geraldine in death were husband, G.T. Bailey; parents, Carl and Sarah Usry; niece, Laura Brown Wilson; and, nephew, Douglas Gordon Brown, who died on May 17, one year ago. She is survived by her two sisters, Earldine Usry Jackson, Hartselle, AL and Carlene Usry Murphy, Augusta; nephew, Vinson Jackson, Mobile, AL (Karen); Star Jackson Golden (Earnie), Hartselle, AL; 8 grand nieces and nephews and 6 great-grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Augusta, Ga. Memorials may be given to a church of choice.
