Mary Alice West Biggar (1930–2025) passed away in Anderson, SC, on November 14, 2025. Mary (“Aunt Alice”), formerly of mid-state South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia, had resided in Anderson since early 2020.
The youngest child of the late Henry T. West and Alma Moore West, Mary spent much of her childhood enjoying time at the grocery stores her father owned in Camden and Great Falls, SC. A self-described “tomboy,” she climbed trees, played with her dog (Spot), and roamed the woods with her nephew, Billy. When her two older brothers joined the Army during WWII, Mary and her older sisters helped run their father’s grocery store, filling orders and making deliveries. Devout Christians, she and her family of eight attended the local Baptist church every time the doors were open.
Mary graduated as salutatorian of Great Falls High School, where she also received several honors, including Miss High Miss and Valentine Sweetheart.
She graduated from Columbia Business College, then attended the University of South Carolina, where she majored in English and History, married her college sweetheart (George Biggar), and later earned a bachelor’s degree. She worked as the payroll bookkeeper for Great Falls High School, as a secretary at Southern Bell Telephone Company in Columbia, and later as a teacher at Augusta Training Shop for the Handicapped and at Augusta Christian School, where she taught sixth grade. Most of her adult life, however, was devoted to being a full-time mother of four and grandmother of thirteen—as well as an “adopted” grandmother to three additional children.
If Mary Biggar could read the above, she would insist that her most meaningful accomplishment was her relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her role as an intercessory prayer warrior. Anyone who knew her would say the same. So many were blessed just in knowing her because of the impact that her faith and relationship with Jesus had on their lives. In her later decades, when she wasn’t reading her Bible or praying, she was cooking for family, tutoring grandchildren, reading, researching, writing poetry, writing notebooks of Biblical references and reflections, and creating inspirational key-ring cards for everyone she knew. Although she slowed down in reading and writing during her final years in Anderson, she loved telling hilarious stories about her childhood to anyone who would listen. And she NEVER slowed down in her prayer life or in praying faithfully for her family and close friends.
Mary Biggar is survived by her four children: Penny Biggar Tritt (Terry), Cheryl Robyn Biggar Smith (David), George Curtis Biggar (Cindy), and Tammy Biggar Hall (Rob); her grandchildren Benjamin Tritt, Karen Tritt Binnarr, Kristin Rebekah Tritt, Mary Tritt Escobar, Aaron Thompson, Midori Thompson Roseberry, Calie Biggar Cook, George Christopher Biggar, Josh Biggar, Jeremy Biggar, Shannon Hall Sullivan, Tara Hall Brose, and Tessa Hall Osborn. She is also survived by sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, George C. Biggar, Jr.
The funeral service will be held Monday, November 17, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at the Thomas Poteet & Son Chapel with Rev. David Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
