Augusta, GA – Michael Bernard Altamirano, 69, entered into rest on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Michael Altamirano was born in San Francisco, California, and spent much of his life along the West Coast before eventually settling in Georgia to be closer to his family. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Michael carried the spirit of service and independence throughout his life. He worked in a variety of fields over the years, never confined by convention, and always guided by a deep sense of freedom and authenticity. A true free spirit, Michael lived life on his own terms, embracing adventure and simplicity in equal measure. His greatest joy came later in life when he became a grandfather—a role he cherished deeply. To his grandchildren, he was lovingly known as both “Papa” and “Granddaddy,” and he gave them all the love, time, and devotion his heart could hold.
Family members include his dearest sister: Barbara Vicini (Gino), brothers: Barry Starkey (Rebeca) and Roger Cook (Bella); his children: Michael A. Altamirano, Lena Poulos, Sherrie Chiles (Anthony), Mikey Altamirano and Gino Altamirano; grandchildren: Carolina, Donovan, Nick (Kenzie), Sean (Taylor), Hunter, Caleb, Carter, Camille, Peyton, Konnor, Elijah, Maya, Amelia, Benjamin; great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Cypress, Jariah, Isla-Kate, and Corey. Mr. Altamirano was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Nancy Rose Bianco, father, Bob Cook, and a son, Nicholas Alexander Altamirano.
Heartfelt gratitude to special friends, Kelly Adriano and Ny’ya Cox of Madison Heights Memory Care, as well as to Pruitt Health Hospice for their tireless dedication and unwavering support in caring for Michael.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM EST in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy. A private burial will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, SC at a later date.
